This project was done during a bench period at the company I work for. I would like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to learn. It was also done by following the Sculpting the Human Skull course from Gnomon made by William Crossland which was very useful. After a while the skull became completely my own so the result is very different from the course results, which I think gives me the ability to claim it as my own. After finishing this course, I am a lot more confident in tackling more organic scenes and objects but I also believe it made my hard surface skills better.
As a hard surface and environment artist, I though to myself what object would help me diversity my skills portfolio. After thinking about it for a bit, I realized that a skull is a perfect subject matter. For one, it is the perfect bridge between hard surface and organic and also, a lot of games, from fantasy to sci fi environments contain all sorts of objects, modular kits, weapons that include skulls or necessitate more organic sculpting and modeling. Learning this was VERY fun but also a bit difficult luckily. I recommend every 3D artist learn how to make a skull. It is so useful to know how to make it and skulls are just cool overall!
In order to showcase the skull, I decided to make a small Vanitas scene, with religious imagery.
I hope you like it as much as I loved making it!
